Reading successfully goes well beyond fluency and word recognition and relies heavily upon comprehension of text. Reading strategies are purposeful, cognitive actions that we take when we are reading to help us construct and maintain meaning. Different reading strategies are needed for different subject disciplines, and even for different kinds of writing within the same subject. Subjects in the humanities and social sciences often require fairly rapid reading of large amounts of information. Reading for these subjects requires you know where to look for the information you need, and to use contents and index pages very closely.
You may also be asked to read about the same topic from different angles. This means that you need to ‘get a feel’ for what is written rather than knowing all the details. Be selective about what you read depending on your purpose and interest.
Science subjects tend to require slower and closer reading of smaller amounts of text. Generally, you will need to work through what is written in close detail, making sure you understand the different steps. For most subjects, you need to change between different reading strategies.
We will study four widely used strategies, such as skimming, scanning, critical reading and summary.

Skimming can be described as one of the techniques based on quick reading of the text, avoiding the unknown terms, the purpose is to get the main idea of the text quickly and get the meanings of unfamiliar words using context. Some tips for this technique are: make a "pre look" of the text, will help give you a quick idea of the text, While you read, you have to looking for connections, summaries... anything what helps to give you a quick idea of the text, at the end give it another reading to complement the idea obtained
Scanning technique is faster than Skimming, useful for finding specific words in the text; the purpose is to process large amounts of text and quickly get specifically what you are looking for. Some tips for this technique are: must be clear about what you are looking for, make a mental image with which to relate the search term, anticipate how certain data as numbers or names, and analyze the organization the content before starting to read

Summary in Spanish means “Resumen”, this technique consists in read critically and then take a paraphrase of what you understand what the text is about. The summary is a good reading and study strategy as it comes to understand the main idea and important points of the readed text, study this technique should be used more frequently by students to gain a better understanding of what is read and thus have a higher academic performance.
Critical Reading in Spanish means “Lectura Crítica” is a slow and detailed reading of the text, trying to see the relationships of the various ideas put forward, for what purpose, what way. With the idea of a detailed analysis of the reading and understanding the text, is a very good for students because, as stated above focuses on the major details and the manner of connection of the ideas that wants to transmit the text.
